Common Medi-Cal & Medicare Questions

Can I keep my Medicare doctor on Medi-Cal?

You will often be able to stay with your same doctors while on both programs. Medicare beneficiaries with Medi-Cal can still go to any Medicare provider. However, your healthcare provider may choose not to take patients who have Medi-Cal.

Will my coverage work out of state?

In general, no, out-of-state coverage is not included in either Medicare or Medi-Cal. Some emergency services may be covered, and Medi-Cal may cover some services if they are negotiated ahead of time with your care coordinator. There may be exceptions if you live close to the California border.

Can I keep my plan if I move?

Probably not. Medicare Advantage plans are available based on your ZIP code and county, while your Medi-Cal coverage will be managed at a county level. So if you move to a different county or ZIP code, you will need to notify your Medi-Cal office and Medicare plan provider. The good news is that most counties will have comparable plans. You don’t want to wait long before taking care of your coverage after a move – Medicare Special Enrollment Periods for moves only last about two months.

How often can I apply for Medi-Cal?

You can apply for Medi-Cal any time that your financial situation has changed and you think that you may be eligible. For people under 65 who may be applying with taxes, that’s likely to be a yearly basis. If you are deemed eligible, your coverage may backdate to the time of your application.

When can I apply for a dual eligible plan?

Enrollment for D-SNPs is usually available through Special Enrollment Periods almost year-round. If you have recently become eligible for Medi-Cal or had a change in coverage, please consult with an insurance agent to find out if you are eligible for changing Medicare plans.
